Emergency Visit of the In-Laws

This morning, I logged onto my work computer and saw this chat log:

Service Restored (Mainly)

Well, my 4 day ordeal seems to be coming to an end. Nearly all service has been restored... still some stuff thats down (such as logging in to login, needed for tunnels... pam_ldap broken somewhere along the line). PHP was updated to 5.3, which broke MediaWiki; I'm going to update that as soon as possible.

I'm seriously beat... this has been hellish.

FreeBSD: ?%&# You

So, today I managed to blow up my server. Interestingly, the jails are still working- at least until a reboot. I was updating the main server, and had a failed installworld... actually the command I got was because installworld, for updating the jails, was failing. So, for everybody out there, never run this unless you are 100% sure you need to:

make -f Makefile.inc1 install

It overwrote my libc before failing... and all recovery methods have failed to date. So, I have a few options now. 1. Hope I never have a power outage, and keep everything running.

FreeBSD: A love affair

So, I finally figured out how to deal with my CUPS daemon inside a jail. My home server- the one that runs this site- is pretty slick, if I do say so myself- it's a FreeBSD machine, partitioned into a whole bunch of service jails. The main one includes CUPS, which runs my shared laser printer. Problem is that it's an old parallel-port printer- it needs access ot the lpt0 device. Just getting that device to show up in the jail was a struggle, unfortunately I can't remember what I did for that.

Accounting System Back Online

I got the accounting system back online while we were working on Datesim.org this weekend, and spent some time updating the accounts. Still a lot of back entry to do there, but with Datesim.org showing a measure of profitability, we need to keep track of this. Chris (Lee), you'll need to get up to speed with NolaPro accounting here.
Datesim.org also made a lot of progress this weekend; we got 3 new developers trained up on content entry in the system. This will allow us to get out the mini-projects quickly with any luck.

Added Calendar to CWS Software Site

So, realizing that I had not already done this, I created an event calendar for use on this site. Amazing oversite that! It should also eventually have iCal support, give me a little bit and I'll have that nailed.

More Datesim Progress

OK, first up, big shout out to Kimberly for creating the Datesim.org logo. It looks AWESOME- perfect for what we need! The hearts are perfect as well.
So, Datesim.org is taking some major strides, very quickly. Last night, despite being dead tired, Shanahan and I powered through a few major bugs (race conditions in the AJAX calls), and ended up getting navigation and optional events working great. We also got a lot of small styling and useability bugs fixed; the engine is really starting to get polished.

Datesim Moves Forward

Worked most of the day yesterday on Datesim, and I got a few big things done. One, I have done some styling work on the site- the side columns are now 160 px wide instead of 180, to match the Google Adsense "Wide Skyskraper" ad format. Two, I got Google Adsense and Analytics configured and on the site- those with the webmaster role (once logged in) won't see them, but you'll see the placeholders; it's all working well. Third, I got Ubercart and Paypal integrated and working like a charm.

Progress

Just a quick update, things are actually going very well right now. With Rugby season falling apart on me, I've been in the office, along with Jerry and Shanahan, and those two are making good progress. Datesim is shaping up nicely, with Shanahan starting to get his head wrapped around the engine- we managed to get the revamped character system in the engine working last night. The tech demo he put together is working well, revealing stuff we need to fix, but overall it's working well. Jerry is working on Mini-Piggy, gaining valuable experience.

Back in the Office

Hey all, it's Tuesday Night and I'm here in the office, first time in a while. The wedding went off without a hitch! Taken a week to recover, though. 17 hour time difference = crazy jet lag when you get home. Note that for your future reference!
